We'll begin with a review of the fundamental principles of painting including a discussion of drawing, values, composition, color, and then talk about building a concept for your painting. The goal is not to develop a photographic copy of your scene, but to develop your personal experience of the landscape into a beautiful and believable place on your canvas. In the field, students will work on small compositions and value studies first and progress to developing an idea and painting some small plein air paintings on the second day. Students should bring a photo of a landscape on the first day. About Your Instructor: Born in Pennsylvania and raised on a farm near Pittsburgh, Kath has always felt a great affinity for the outdoor landscape. She has a degree in fine arts and worked as a graphic designer and illustrator while also working on pastels and paintings of her own. She discovered the joys and challenges of outdoor plein air painting in 2014 and has been concentrating on oil landscapes, and goes plein air painting often. She was chosen as the Petrified Forest National Park Artist in Residence for September 2019, where she completed many plein air paintings around the park. She recently had a month-long solo show at Tina Davis Studio Gallery in June of 2019 of larger landscape paintings. Her other shows include an exhibit of her paintings of Longmont in 2018, called Everyday Longmont, featuring plein air scenes from around town. Her work has been shown in group and solo exhibitions in many local venues and she currently shows at Osmosis Gallery in Niwot and at the Boulder Open Studios POP! gallery. She's received many awards, and won 1st Place and Best Landscape awards in the Boulder Plein Air Festival 2017 and 1st Place award in the quick paint competition at the Boulder Plein Air Festival 2018. She won several honorable mention awards in 2018 and 2019, and Best Use of Line award at the Boulder Arts Association (BAA) annual show. She recently received the 1st Place Award in the Plein Air Artists of Colorado (PAAC) annual national show in June 2019.She is a member of the PAAC and a member of Oil Painters of America.
